What is the Freedom to Learn Forum?

The F2L forum is a way of seeding, growing, rehearsing and practising approaches to education and learning that are different to the dominant paradigm. The unconference format encourages spontaneous collaboration, creativity and shared organising of the gathering.

Unlike traditional conferences, there are no pre-set speakers or fixed topics; anyone of any age can propose or request an event, workshop, discussion or activity and everyone’s contribution matters.

You are welcome whether you are brimming with offerings, questions, curiosity or uncertainty; we recognise that stepping into a new space with an unfamiliar structure can feel exciting to some and daunting to others – we hope our attempt to make the unknown more known will help bridge the gap, and if questions or feelings remain please reach out and let us know what you need by email hello@freedomtolearn.uk

Whilst every year brings new inquiries, knowledge and interests, we can share what came to life in previous years:

Collectively provided shared meals are one of the most loved parts of previous Forums. We offer a buffet-style food bar where you can assemble your own meal from a variety of complementary dishes. This makes a meaningful difference for many people – especially families, those with allergies, sensory differences, or particular preferences around eating and rest.

We also enjoy the opportunity to share food that is personally meaningful and significant. We invite anyone who would like to contribute to our shared meals to suggest and help prepare a favourite dish together with others. Whether it’s a family recipe, a meal connected to your heritage or culture, or simply something you love to cook and share, we hope our meals will reflect the richness of our community. We encourage plant-based dishes as the shared foundation so everyone can eat together, with the option of offering non-plant based accompaniments or toppings alongside them where appropriate. All ingredients will be provided.

Sharing food is one of humanity’s oldest communal practices. Across cultures meals have long been a way of expressing hospitality, celebrating, grieving, remembering and caring for one another. We hope the spaces we create around food become places where relationships are nourished, stories are exchanged, and where we continue to explore what solidarity asks of us in practice.

As part of that ongoing exploration, we continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to the ongoing genocide by the Israeli government. We also stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and all communities experiencing displacement, occupation, war, colonial violence, and systemic injustice across the world. We invite you to join us as we seek not to escape reality, but to come to terms with our entanglement.

We acknowledge that people who are marginalised and have experiences of harm in similar spaces may look for representation and safer space language as indicators of whether our environment will be safe enough. We recognise that no space is outside wider systems of power and privilege, and that we each come into shared spaces with different relationships to safety, belonging and exclusion.

We understand the limitations of safer spaces language and how visual forms of representation can be tokenised – particularly when it implies that harm can be fully removed or guaranteed against. Instead we are working towards cultivating braver, more attentive, and relational ways of being together where difference, complexity, and repair can be met with openness and potential for change.

We pay attention to power dynamics and practice listening, care, consent, and responsibility together. When harm or a rupture of any kind does arise we hope for a willingness to move beyond the individual fragility of being with the discomfort of the experience, so we can learn from the experience collectively.

We understand this as ongoing practice rather than a fixed state and welcome further discussion. Our current community agreements were created in the Forum 2025 as a way to help us live into these intentions. These will be shared leading up to the Forum, and at the start of our gathering  and can be discussed, adapted and evolved.

“To build community requires vigilant awareness of the work we must continually do to undermine all the socialization that leads us to behave in ways that perpetuate domination.”

Bell Hooks
